FORTIFIED Roofing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast

Gulf South Roofing installs FORTIFIED roofs across the Mississippi Gulf Coast from its Gulfport office. FORTIFIED is a construction standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), and the designation is issued by an independent evaluator — not by the roofer. A FORTIFIED Roof can qualify for wind-premium discounts and Mississippi grant funding.

The standard

What makes a roof FORTIFIED?

FORTIFIED is an installation method, not an upgraded shingle. The standard changes what happens under the covering — and every requirement is verified by an independent evaluator before the designation is issued.

In the order it happens on your roof

Six stages

  1. Gulf South Roofing crew fastening a roof to the FORTIFIED nailing schedule

    Ring-shank nailing pattern

The deck is fastened with ring-shank nails on a tighter pattern than code requires, roughly doubling its resistance to being peeled off by uplift.

  2. A roof deck fully sealed with self-adhering ice-and-water membrane, every seam lapped and taped, beside a brick chimney on a Gulf Coast home

    Sealed roof deck

The deck seams are sealed so that even if the covering blows off in a storm, the house does not take on water. This is the core of the standard — most storm losses are water, not wind.

  3. Edge and ridge detail locked down on a Gulf Coast shingle roof

    Locked-down edges

Wider drip edge, fully adhered starter courses and rated edge metal — because roof failure in wind starts at the edge, not the field.

  4. Rated shingle system detail on a Diamondhead Mississippi roof

    Impact-rated attachments

Vents and attachments rated for wind-driven rain, so the openings in the roof do not become the way water gets in.

  5. A completed roof ready for its independent FORTIFIED evaluation

    Third-party evaluation

An independent, IBHS-accredited evaluator inspects the work at the stages that matter and issues the designation. Roofers cannot self-certify — including us.

  6. A finished Gulf Coast roof of the type earning the FORTIFIED designation

    The designation certificate

You receive the FORTIFIED certificate for the house. It is what the insurer discounts against, and it transfers with the home when you sell.

Why it pays

What a FORTIFIED Roof does for a Gulf Coast homeowner

What does FORTIFIED do to my insurance bill?

The Mississippi Windstorm Underwriting Association discounts wind premiums for FORTIFIED designations — published at 20% for FORTIFIED Roof, more for Silver and Gold — and some private carriers go higher on the wind portion.

  • Published discounts: MWUA schedule: 20% for FORTIFIED Roof, 25% Silver, 30% Gold on wind premium. Confirm current figures with your agent.
  • Carrier credits: Some private carriers discount the wind portion more. Your agent quotes against the certificate.
  • Every renewal: The discount recurs for the life of the designation, not once.

FORTIFIED roofing FAQs — Gulfport & the Mississippi Gulf Coast

What is a FORTIFIED Roof?

A roof built to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard — sealed deck, ring-shank fastening and locked edges — and verified by an independent evaluator.

FORTIFIED is a construction standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, the research arm of the insurance industry. It focuses on keeping water out even when a storm damages the covering, which is where most coastal storm losses actually come from.

How much does a FORTIFIED Roof save on insurance in Mississippi?

The MWUA’s published schedule discounts wind premiums 20% for FORTIFIED Roof, 25% for Silver and 30% for Gold; some carriers go higher.

The discount applies to the wind portion of the premium and recurs at every renewal for the life of the designation. Figures change — confirm the current schedule with your insurance agent before counting on a number.

What about the Strengthen Mississippi Homes grant program?

The state grant program for FORTIFIED retrofits is currently paused after exhausting its funding; the insurance discounts are unaffected and remain the durable financial case.

Strengthen Mississippi Homes (SB 2409) offered grants for FORTIFIED Roof retrofits before pausing when funds ran out. If it reopens, we will say so here — check current status at mid.ms.gov. The wind-premium discount, by contrast, is not a program that runs out; it recurs at every renewal for the life of the designation.

Does a FORTIFIED Roof cost much more than a normal replacement?

The upgrade is a modest increment on a replacement already underway, because the deck work happens while the deck is exposed.

The added cost is the deck sealing, upgraded fastening, edge detail and the evaluator’s fee. Your estimate prices the roof both ways so the increment is a number, not a guess — and the insurance discount runs at every renewal against it.

Who issues the FORTIFIED designation?

An independent, IBHS-accredited evaluator — never the roofing contractor.

The evaluator inspects at specific stages, including the sealed deck before it is covered, and inspects the materials used — not only the workmanship — before issuing the certificate. This is why the designation carries weight with insurers: the party being paid for the roof is not the party certifying it.

Where do you install FORTIFIED roofs?

Across Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, from our Gulfport office.

That includes Gulfport, Biloxi, Long Beach, Pass Christian, D’Iberville, Diamondhead, Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, Moss Point and St. Martin.
