Scope

What does a shingle roof installation include?

A shingle roof is a system, not a covering. Each of the following is part of every architectural shingle roof Gulf South Roofing installs — the warranty depends on all of it, not just the shingle.

In the order it happens on your roof

Eight stages

  1. Old three-tab shingles coming off down to the bare deck during a Gulf South Roofing tear-off on the Mississippi Gulf Coast

    Full tear-off to the deck

The old roof comes off. We do not install roof-overs — a second layer hides the sheathing, and the sheathing is where problems start.

  2. Bare OSB roof deck checked with a tape measure at the eave before the new system goes down

    Deck inspection and repair

With the covering off, delaminated or rotted sheathing is identified, photographed and replaced before anything goes back down.

  3. Self-adhering ice-and-water shield rolled up the valley on a bare plywood deck before the field underlayment

    Leak barrier in the valleys

Ice-and-water shield where the roof concentrates water — valleys, penetrations and the eave — under the field underlayment.

  4. White synthetic underlayment dried in across the full roof of a brick Gulf Coast home before the shingles go on

    Synthetic underlayment

Laid across the field to the manufacturer’s specification, because the Limited Lifetime warranty is written against that specification.

  5. New step and counter flashing sealed against a brick chimney on a finished architectural shingle roof

    Flashing and edge metal

New drip edge, valley metal, step and counter flashing. Non-standard profiles are bent in our own Gulfport sheet metal shop rather than ordered in and trimmed to fit.

  6. Ridge vent line on a completed Gulf Coast shingle roof

    Balanced ventilation

Ridge exhaust and intake are assessed together. An attic that cannot breathe cooks the shingle from underneath and shortens the life of the roof above it.

  7. Debris netting hung from the eave and tarps spread on the lawn to catch tear-off debris during a shingle replacement

    Daily cleanup and magnet sweep

The site is cleaned at the end of every day, not only at the end of the job, and the drive and lawn are swept with a rolling magnet.

  8. A project manager walking the finished roof with the homeowner

    Final walkthrough

A project manager walks the finished roof with you and closes the job out in writing, with the warranty documents in hand.

What does the 130 MPH wind uplift rating actually mean?

Architectural shingle systems we install are rated to withstand wind speeds up to 130 MPH when they are installed to the manufacturer’s nailing and starter specification.

  • Nailing pattern: Fastener count and placement per the manufacturer’s high-wind specification, not the minimum.
  • Starter and edge: A proper starter course at the eave and rake, which is where uplift begins.
  • Sealed field: Shingles rely on their factory sealant strip bonding — laid so it can.

Architectural shingle FAQs — Gulfport & the Mississippi Gulf Coast

How long does an architectural shingle roof last on the Gulf Coast?

Architectural shingle systems are typically rated for 25 to 30 years, and manufacturers back them with a Limited Lifetime warranty.

Coastal exposure shortens the practical life of any roof: UV load, humidity, salt air and wind-driven rain all work on the shingle at once. The two things that most change how long yours lasts are the attic ventilation underneath it and whether the flashing details were done properly. Both are part of every Gulf South Roofing installation.

How long does it take to replace a shingle roof?

It depends on the roof, and your project manager can give you a duration once they have seen it.

Size, pitch, the number of elevations and how much deck needs replacing all move the number, which is why we do not publish a standard timeline. What is the same on every job: the site is cleaned at the end of each day, and the roof is dried in before the crew leaves it.

Can you install new shingles over my existing roof?

No. Gulf South Roofing does not install roof-overs.

A second layer hides the decking, and the decking is where most real problems live. It also adds weight, traps heat, and generally voids the wind rating the shingle is sold on. Every roof we install comes off to the deck first so the sheathing can be inspected and repaired.

Which shingle brands do you install?

We are certified installers for GAF, Atlas and CertainTeed, and we will price any other brand you ask for.

We can also install Owens Corning, TAMKO and other brands — we are not certified installers for those, so the enhanced manufacturer warranties that come with certification do not apply. All of the architectural systems we install are manufacturer-backed Limited Lifetime systems. Some warranties can be upgraded when additional system components are installed — your project manager will show you what changes and what it costs.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Gulf South Roofing is licensed and insured in Mississippi and certified to install the systems it sells.

We are also a certified FORTIFIED installer, which means a shingle roof can be built and third-party inspected to the IBHS FORTIFIED standard if you want the wind-mitigation credit that comes with it.

Where do you install shingle roofs?

Across Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties, from the Gulf South Roofing office at 2811 26th Avenue in Gulfport.

Every city in the three counties. Harrison County: Gulfport, Biloxi, Long Beach, Pass Christian, D'Iberville, Lyman and Saucier; Hancock County: Diamondhead, Bay St. Louis, Waveland and Kiln; Jackson County: Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, Moss Point, St. Martin, Vancleave and Gautier.
